It had long been the desire of the forefathers of the Church of Christ (Holiness) U.S.A. to have a church in the State of Texas. January 6, 1972, Elder Samuel Murry and Elder Jesse Augerson met in the home of Bro. & Sis. James Swayzer to begin mission work for the Lord. Before his death on May 23, 1972, Elder Murry made four visits to Houston. He encouraged the group by Bro. and Sis. Isodore Augustine. Bishop J. C. Smith, who was the presiding officer of the South Western Diocese, also envisioned a work being started in Houston, Texas.
On October 19, 1972, Bishop J. L. Burris, who succeeded Bishop Smith as presiding officer of the South Western Diocese, came to Houston and officially organized the mission. Bishop Burris initiated the securing of the State Church Charter at that time and began to seek prayerfully a shephard for the flock. After much prayer, meditation and consultation, Bishop Burris requested the release of Eld. W. E. Drake from the Western Diocese by Bishop A. J. Perkins.
In August 1974, the church purchased two and one half acres of land on the corner of South Acres and Glenhollow for the new church site. Ground breaking took place on May 18, 1975 and the first worship service in the new building was held on October 12, 1975. The official entry into the building was November 30, 1975. The dedicatory service was held on May 30, 1976 with Pastor Drake and Bishop Burris officiating.
Through much prayer and hard work the church continued to grow. The church received its state and federal exemption in May of 1976. Pastor Drake was given the first "Pastor of the Year Award" of the South Western Diocese for 1976 - 1977. At the National Convention in Norfolk, Virginia in August, 1979, Texas was approved to become the Fourth District of the South Western Diocese. In 1980 First Church and the South Western Diocese hosted the S.S. & H.Y.P.U. Congress and National Convention in Houston, Texas. The first Fourth District Convention under the presidency of Eld. Drake, was held at First Church in May 1981. Since Texas has became a district, a mission in Houston (an outgrowth of First Church) was organized in January 1982, pastored by Eld. Huey Augustine, Sr. The mission in Beaumont, Texas, pastored by Eld. David Hollins, was revitalized in September 1982.
In 1981, the educational wing of the church was completed by the men of the church. In 1983, the 10th Anniversary was celebrated and a plan was made to burn the church mortgage in the near future. Pastor Drake commends the members of First Church for their dedication and willingness to sacrifice as we embark upon the task to burning our church mortgage. He thanks the many saints and friends for their prayerful and continual support.
